If I remember correctly, we only had 3 staffed camps where we could get
water. We brought a filter/purifier unit and were told by Philstaff to
still add Polar Pure to avoid Giardia. You don't want to take any chances
on that! I'll admit I was apprehensive about drinking "warm iodine water"
but found it really wasn't bad at all. To me, it just tasted like water
that had been sitting out overnight in a plastic water bottle. You could
probably get by without filtering it, but we had a lot of rain the first 7
days and the water sources were quite muddy. No technique we found worked
to gather relatively clear water, and there was a lot of sediment to deal
with. One of our advisors liked to have his quiet time down by the stream
filtering water, and had no problem sharing it with the crew. To us,
carrying the filter/purifier AND Polar Pure was worth it. Everyone stayed
hydrated and no one got sick.
