One of the boys in my Council Contigent last summer was pretty small. He
made 5 our ot 6 training hikes/campouts, and was still pretty scared he
wouldn't be able to make it.............even up to the point we were taking
photos at Philmont the day we headed out on the trail.
Before we left, I told him that he would make it, because done his best to
train for it. Most of our training hikes were harder than the hike he was
doing at Philmont.
The leaders in his crew kept his gear to a minimum, no crew gear, and he
traded the tent back and forth with his partner. I believe he did carry his
lunch for the day.
We ran into him and his crew about half way through the trek, and he had a
BIG smile on his face. He was having a great time.
Equipment, packing, along with physical and MENTAL preparation are KEY to
the success on the Philmont trail. I heard so many horror stories back in
1999, from crews who had not even thought about mental preparation for their
trek. Getting crews to communicate, work together in all types of
conditions (fatigue, rain, missing Philmont program, eating food they don't
like, etc) will help prepare crews for the Philmont trail.
One suggestion, when picking a trek from the advisor guide, be sure to check
the level of difficulty on the first couple of days. Don't start out too
hard...............
