Look at a Kelty Yukon or Jansport Scout. These are appropriate for a smaller scout and will carry all the meals and crew gear he may need. As a former Camp Director at Philmont, and manages a climbing and Backpacking shop I would hesitate to recommend any of our Go-lite, Granite gear, Gregory or Mountainsmith Ultra light packs to anyone as a first pack. If I were a Ranger is summer my choice would be a Gregory G pack because of the very good suspension and enough size to carry food for Mountain Treks or Rayado treks. I like the smaller external frames as they are easier for the guys to pack and are about 100 dollars. Remember a Phil tent will weigh about 3 pounds per person. We use Sierra Designs Clip Flashlight at 4 lbs for two people for our council contingents and recomend the Marmot Pre-cip jackets for those who do not own raingear.

  Subject: [Philmont]: Pack size?

Looking for suggestions on pack size for Philmont. I have one boy who is about 4' 11'"and about 80 pounds. I don't have any worries about his ability to make the trek. I am, however concerned about the size of internal frame pack. I don't want him carrying a 5000 cu. in. pack at his size, due to balance, not to mention a pack that size when full, will well exceed the 20- 25% pack weight for his size. On the other hand, I want it to be large enough to carry his gear and his fair share of the group gear. I found a Kelty 3675 internal frame pack, which is sized to fit a woman or youth of his size. Any experienced trekkers have any comments or suggetions?
