Several issues at work here, but I say take the boys to Philmont when you are lucky enough to get in, and when their age group buddies are going. I can't imagine telling a capable scout he can't go when his buddies are going and there is room in the crew. But that's not the point I want to make. My point is, don't let the adults try to make the crews "perfect" at Philmont. It's a learning experience. The rangers are great and go over everything. There is going to be some stress and tension. That's what thorns and roses is for. I learned more from getting through the rough parts (at age 50), than I did from knowing that I had great equipment from Cooper's Guide. The boys (& adults) will fail and struggle at some points. Do your best to make sure no one gets hurt. Take a chair and chill checking out that awesome view.
