  No dumb questions. Cingular is reputed to have coverage in Base Camp. No reliable coverage in Backcountry. If you carry a Cell, you will be given a number to call in case of emergency. All other communication by Trekkers is by going to the nearest staffed camp.
  BTW...When we came to the Tooth last summer, someone was using a cell to call for help for a guy in trouble on the ridge. Just so happened we had a medical staffer that had "tagged" us all the way from Shaeffer's. Good things happen at Philmont.
