To add to this I carried AT&T and checked coverage and it was non-existant except off Tooth Ridge where I did use my cell to report a medical problem, bump on the head and cut which required stitches. But this way the only location outside of about a 1 mile of base that the cell phone worked.
Now I did here a story from one of the senior staff at Philmont just two weeks ago where an advisor climbed to a ridge and call home to wish his wife a happy birthday. Problem was he did this near dark and then had no idea where he was. When he called his wife back to let here know that he was lost, didn't have the local number on him, his battery died. Philmont then received a frantic call from his wife who didn't know his trek number or had any idea of where he was. They finally were able to track down his trek thru his home town. Somebody forget to leave critical information at home. True story!
