Mick,
You'll find cell phone coverage spotty if you can find it at all. There was
a thread last year where a couple of rangers reported on the coverage they
had and it wasn't encouraging.
There is also an excellent article on the "BackpackingLight" site which
discusses wireless use in the wilderness and explains why some phones work
in your part of the country but perhaps not on your hike in a different part
