I will be an advisor for a crew attending Philmont in the summer of 2004.
I have heard that Philmont had a major fire a few years ago. I have been
to Philmont 4 times already, but I am wondering what, if anything, has
changed in the Philmont program due to the fires. Are the trek options
changed very much? Are there any new "rules" that the crew should be
prepared for?

There is a separte group (with about 750 members) about only Philmont -
you can sign up at http://usscouts.org/lists/. After a recent lull
following the end of the 2003 season, traffic on tht list has picked up
again.

Regarding the 2002 fire, everything north of Route 64 was closed until
early July and then reopened in stages. North trek routes were replaced
by fire modified ones, and they changed constantly throughout the summer.
No cabins or other major structures were lost.

Last summer all of the north was open, with minimal changes to the planned
routes from 2002. Crews in the north had opportunities to do fire
restoration conservation projects at all staffed camps affected by the
fire, and were encouraged to do so at more than the required one.

I don't have access to the numbers at the moment, so this is only my fuzzy
recollection, but approximately 20,000 acres were affected, with about a
quarter completely burned, a half partially burned, and another quarter
within the burn area unburned.
