With all due respect, one of the purposes of the "camp shoe" is not just for
the benefit of the hiker; it is also for the benefit of the campsite. With
running shoes making up a majority of camp shoes the effect is diminished, but
the soles of most camp shoes create less impact on the camp area than most
hiking boots. Granted, many campsites are so impacted that it is hard to
inflict further damage, but for those that aren't, particularly trail camps,
the benefits over the summer are worth it.

In addition, if you blow out a boot or get a severe blister and you don't have
a pair of shoes that you can use as a backup, you're trek is probably done.
