Bob: The first time I did this was in 1991 at Comanche Peak Campsite. It was cold (38 degrees when we went to bed and 36 when we woke up) and drizzly. All of my socks were wet and I did not want to hike in wet socks the next day. To my amazement, my socks 85% wool socks were dry by 3am. Since then, I have used thor-lo's and now smart wool and have dried them in my bag without problem.
The real difficulty with this approach is the THOUGHT of putting on moist, clammy socks!!! After about 10 minutes, wool warms when it is wet and I have always had dry socks by 3am.
Regarding my sleeping bag, I use a 20 degree down bag. Again, I used this technique of drying socks in 1991, 92, 93, 94, 95, 96, 97, 98, 02, and 03. I did not think about it in 89 and 90.

However, that does absolutely nothing positive for the insulation factor of your sleeping bag. In our case, we hit a couple of 32- 35 degree nights on and around Mt Phillips. I wouldn't even want to think about a damp to wet bag. It rained every day we were there last summer, and also took every opportunity to dry out our bags, tents and equipment before the next rain fall. Normally that is why it is a goodd idea to put on dry clothing before retiring into the sack. Just food for thought.
