We used it for a trek this past summer. I found it useful for generating elevation charts for each day's trek. Yes you could get that from the map as well but it was pretty convenient although it did take some effort to get the plots printed. I was disappointed that there is an extra package (and extra cost) to allow it to interoperate with my GPS (didn't bother).
The day before we left for Philmont my laptop crashed and I had to contact the Interactive Ranger support guys who were very helpful in providing a new key to allow me to use it on my home desktop computer (you can't just plug the CD into any computer and install it without a unique key for each computer).
