Bill,

Sounds like you are on the same path that I followed. I did not think
it was fair to apply as both the troop and crew to increase our chances.
And I was not sure I would have enough venturers to have a crew when I
put our name in the lottery. They talked like they would go, but with
that age group you never know till its time to put the money down. So I
put our troop in the lottery, got three crews (2005 701-M). In the end,
we had two crews that were from the troop and one that was the venturing
crew (although several members were dual registered).

Subject: [Philmont]: lottery with troop and crew from same chartering
org

After 3 years as a scoutmaster, topped off by our first Philmont trek
this past summer, I have found a worthy replacement and stepped down.
My plan now is to start a Venture crew at our school which is already
the chartering org for the troop and pack. My question is how can we
get two Philmont treks at the same time? One would be for the crew and
older scouts and the other for the younger scouts. It would be nice to
have them on the same dates for transportation purposes. Can both units
apply for treks in the lottery? If you can is that fair? If it isn't
fair do people do it anyway? If the crew got two treks and the troop
didn't I'm assuming that the scouts in the troop could go with the crew.
If the troop got two treks and the crew didn't would the female members
of the crew be able to go with the troop? Lastly, does applying for
multiple treks reduce your chances of getting any?

Thanks,

Bill Summers
