We are looking at ideas for things to do before going to Philmont next
summer
<snip>
Between Santa Fe and Philmont, I really liked
Pecos Nat'l Monument - a huge pueblo (pop. c 15,000) that was reduced to
about 27 by disease after contact, and the site of the most significant
Civil War battle in the far west.
Ft Union Nat'l Monument. - a real cavalry fort. Well, ruins thereof,
but nothing like what you see in the movies or on TV. It is really BIG.
And, if you contingent is mostly Catholic, just north of Santa Fe
El Santuario de Chimayo - one of the most visited pilgrimage shrines in
North America. Watch out for tour buses from Quebec.
And, stretched along the Rio Grande, from Taos to Albuquerque, there are
many Indian Pueblos, which all have feast days the same time every
year. Check out the Santa Fe and Albuquerque tourist websites. A feast
day is a combination carnival, with rides and southwestern food; a flea
market; a religious holiday; and a traditional dance (no cameras! and do
not touch the kivas!). I watched the final (public) part of a Koshare
initiation at Picuris Pueblo on their feast day. The initiate had to
climb a greased phone pole and throw down a dead sheep and a watermelon
(presumably also dead).
The Pueblo people are so generous, I have often had to fight back tears
of embaressment for my own culture.
