Self-rightousness?
Defensiveness?
Self-flagellation?

In a discussion amoung Scouters about how Scout units may or may not be
handling themselves properly in parks and wilderness areas? I couldn't
disagree with you more.

If Scout units are getting a bad rap for their actions in federal wilderness
areas, then we as unit leaders need to make absolutely sure that we're not
the problem. Then, we need to get out the word at roundtables and with our
councils that this may be a problem and to encourage the proper training and
following of the LNT principles.

We also need to help our trek crews realize what is proper behavior in
backcountry areas. Most of the time, that behavior is expected to be quiet
and respectful of other crews and backcountry travelers. Wilderness areas,
particularly when other people are around, should rarely be places for
yelling and excessive noise.

Poor LNT techniques and excessive noise can both be BIG reasons for bad
feelings toward Scout crews in the wilderness. A discussion about these
issues on a Philmont and/or Northern Tier-related board is hardly out of
line. In my opinion, it's not only appropriate, but expected.

If you want to learn things in order to train your crews for Philmont and/or
Northern Tier and this particular discussion isn't helping you, simply ask
question(s) and you will get many responses.
