Three man tents are OK, the problem with them is twofold: 1) the weight - especially if you are dividing it up among 2 hikers and 2) there may be problems with some of the sites not being the greatest size to support the tent size. That being said, I've seen some 3-man tents that have similar footprints to 2-man tents.
Boots can still be branded, but be careful and only brand the leather. Branding the synthetic part will create a gaping hole for the rest of the trek. Not so waterresistant after that. I think the size of the brand is about an inch (I never measured it). Ponil brands and I think there are a couple other places.
I have no use for a 50 gal trash bag at all. I do use a trash bag inside my pack to provide a waterproof liner, and a kitchen trash bag inside my sleeping bag stuff sack as a liner.
Cliff Bars and other "power bars" are sometimes included, particularly in breakfast packs. But it just depends on how many you think you need over and above 1 per hiker per day. I'd check the swap boxes. We found the most important thing to bring was the 7 compartment spice bottles with the garlic, salt, pepper, etc. Also, a bottle of tobasco is always nice.

Hi,
I have recently been researching gear suggestions from prior posts, Cooper Wright's "Advisor Guide" (which is great, thanks Coop) various web sites etc. I have a few questions from the information I gained.
1. Are 2 man tents required? Can you use 3 man tents?
2. How big are the brands (1 inch 2 inch)? Do they still brand boots? I was very proud of my brands from 1978 when I went as a young Eagle Scout.
3. I have seen at least two different packing lists that suggested that we bring 50 gal trash bags? What do you do with them?
4. In the past two years our troop has taken 10 crews to the Northern Tier, most of those crews packed extra trail snakes in the form of "Power Bars", "Luna Bars", "Cliff Bars" 1 each per day. They initial weight was heavy, but the daily treat was very well received, a different flavor and style bar each day.
