Kelly,

Experience from this past summer's trek:

1. You could use 3 man tents, but space is limited at most camps. That is,
finding suitable level spots w/o rocks, etc. is at a premium at some
campsites. The 2 man tents gives more flexibility in locations.
2. I'm thinking around 2". Boot branding didn't work for my crew as all had
synthetic uppers. You may want to bring along small pieces of leather (from
craft stores) for branding. Alternative is to purchase the small (1") brands
at Tooth of Time Traders.
3. We used the large trash bags as covers for the packs, both while breaking
and in camp. Quick and easy to use to cover the pack plus provides more
protection from rain (nearly every day and torrential). Also we used the
trash bags to put our dirty clothes in as we tossed them outside the tents
at night.
4. PhilFood consists of lots of Power, Cliff, and Hoo-Hah bars. Almost
every meal has them. A couple of the crew brought "extras" which ended up
back at base camp at the end of the trek. A couple of times the crew got
hungry and doled out the "extras" but after most meals we still had
leftovers from that meal's PhilFood supply.

YIS,

Greg

Subject: [Philmont]: Gear Questions

Hi,
I have recently been researching gear suggestions from prior posts, Cooper
Wright's "Advisor Guide" (which is great, thanks Coop) various web sites
etc. I have a few questions from the information I gained.
1. Are 2 man tents required? Can you use 3 man tents?

2. How big are the brands (1 inch 2 inch)? Do they still brand boots? I
was very proud of my brands from 1978 when I went as a young Eagle Scout.

3. I have seen at least two different packing lists that suggested that we
bring 50 gal trash bags? What do you do with them?

4. In the past two years our troop has taken 10 crews to the Northern Tier,
most of those crews packed extra trail snakes in the form of "Power Bars",
"Luna Bars", "Cliff Bars" 1 each per day. They initial weight was heavy,
but the daily treat was very well received, a different flavor and style bar
each day.
