Items 1, 2 and 4 have been well answered, so I'm going to stick with #3.

Everyone in our crew carried at least a couple of large trash bags.
These should be the heavy duty kind, although we carried 33-gallon bags,
not 50-gallon. The large compactor bags are another heavy duty
alternative but often aren't big enough.

What do you use them for?

How about - emergency pack covers, emergency rain gear, lining your
pack in really inclement weather, keeping wet clothes separated from the
dry items in your pack, for packing a wet tent or dining fly so your
pack doesn't get soaked, carrying out ashes (cold) from your campfire
for LNT scattering off the trail, washing clothes on the trail, dividing
up meals for transport at commissary stops so you don't have to carry
packs, etc.

I'm told that Philmont frowns on this next one, but it is an old
backcountry trick. Grab up a couple of gallons of water and lay in the
sun. After four or five hours the water generally gets warm enough for
a bath. Find an appropriate place (secluded and away from trails and
waterways), take your camp suds and a couple of bandanas, disrobe, climb
in and take a bath. Again, this is not a Philmont recommended practice
but it sure comes in handy on the Continental Divide or in the
backcountry at Big Bend.

A couple of bags per person adds an ounce and stuffs into any space in
your pack.
