Subject: [Philmont]: Gear Questions
Hi,
I have recently been researching gear suggestions from prior posts, Cooper
Wright's "Advisor Guide" (which is great, thanks Coop) various web sites
etc. I have a few questions from the information I gained.
1. Are 2 man tents required? Can you use 3 man tents?
>>> In '04 we used TL4s with 3 men per tent ... footprint isn't an issue
because we had fewer tents ... four for the crew.
2. How big are the brands (1 inch 2 inch)? Do they still brand boots? I
was very proud of my brands from 1978 when I went as a young Eagle Scout.
>>> about 2 x 2
3. I have seen at least two different packing lists that suggested that
we bring 50 gal trash bags? What do you do with them?
>>> Some use them as pack covers overnight, we didn't bring any.
4. In the past two years our troop has taken 10 crews to the Northern
Tier, most of those crews packed extra trail snakes in the form of "Power
Bars", "Luna Bars", "Cliff Bars" 1 each per day. They initial weight was
heavy, but the daily treat was very well received, a different flavor and
style bar each day.
>>> Depends. In general no, lunch and breakfast contain 'treats for the
trail'. That said in '04 we fortunatelty had some powerbars with us as we
had taken to the habit of hikng for an hour or so before breakfast and as a
result discovered that we had a Hypoglycemic scout with us ... No, it wasn't
on his medical form, No his folks didn't mention it, No he didn't really
know anything other than the symptoms were familiar. (They also didn't tell
us he slept walked or had heel spurs). Anyway, nothing a powerbar before we
stepped off didn't fix, and once we got to a swap box nothing a bag of gorp
wouldn't solve. This ought to get things going :-)
And I thought his tentmates were exagerating when they said he was all
over the tent. Imagine just how paranoid I was when we were in the open
"shelters" at Cyphers.
Oh, and yes, the parents survived our return.
