This topic has everything to do with training your crew. A regular theme of
staff discussions at Philmont is the stupid, inconsiderate, and dangerous
things that some crews do. The chaplains, backcountry managers, and
professionals are kept busy every day all summer not just by crews with
interpersonal issues, but by crews who don't feel that they need to follow
the rules that have been explained to them. It's everything from
unauthorized itinerary changes, to swimming in the Cimarron and the Rayado,
to night hiking, to major failures to take bear precautions seriously. It's
certainly not everybody or most, but it is much more than one or two crews.
There are several crews every summer that are pulled off the trail. There
are leaders who are banned. It's the reality of a large operation.

In my opinion, part of the job of preparing a Philmont crew is to get them
to think about how they can take what they've learned on their trek and take
it to other places, to lifelong enjoyment of the outdoors. Keeping this in
mind, it would be an eye opener for many teens to hear about how the NPS,
USFS, etc. view Scout groups.
