I find it amazing that a parent of a child with a medical issue, even a
minor issue, would send them hundreds or thousands of miles away without
providing every bit of pertinent information with the adults entrusted
with their safety, perhaps even their life. They may think, "Oh, Johnny
knows how to handle his asthma by himself." But that logic goes out the
window if Johnny has an accident and is unconscious. Or if they tell the
leader but don't include it on the medical, which is no help if the two
become separated, something that does happen on the trail.
As a leader, I felt the responsibility for the health and welfare of my
crew acutely. Any responsible leader does. But I know there are parents
out there who are either clueless to the gravity of the responsibility
and situation, or just don't care, which is irresponsible. Likewise,
there are leaders out there who don't take it seriously either, such as
the potato canon adults (those things can maim and kill).
>>>off soap box<<<
BTW, all adults on the crew need to sit down together and review the
medical forms so that everyone understands and potential health issues.
And each leader should have a list of everyone's emergency contacts.
Also, you may want to seek parents permission to discuss some of the
more common issues with the crew leader since he or she is the member in
charge. In practice, health issues such as asthma are usually already
well known among troop members from years of camping together. However,
that may not always be the case for crews from multiple troops. I'd
also add an over-the-counter medication release form (as discussed here
many times) for distributing Tylenol, Ammonium AD, Benidryl, etc. (or
generic equivalents). Having the parent review and sign such form in
advance protects you, the crew member and begins the dialog between you
and the parent regarding medical issues.
