RE: [Philmont]: council contingent vs. unit lottery

I have been to Philmont as a Unit crew -- 1999, and also with a council
Contingent in 2003. My younger son wouldn't had been able to go to Philmont
without the council Contingent.

In my Council, those who have NOT been to PHILMONT get priority for the
Council contingent. And the council coordinator will only accept 3 or 4
applications from any single unit. His goal is to get a good mix of scouts
from all over the council. During training I really enjoyed learning about
new trails, campsites, gear, etc. from other scouts and leaders.

The only reason I got to go with my younger son in 2003 (since I had been in
1999 with my older son) was because not enough adults signed up to go with
that Council Contingent. We had 2 crews that year and needed 3 adults per
crew.

My troop has missed out on the Philmont lottery or PHONE in everytime since
April 1997 (the sign up time for summer 1999). (I'm praying and keeping my
fingers crossed for this year.)

Since we have missed having a unit crew since 1999, I have promoted the
Council Contingent everyyear, but NOT ONE scout has ever signed up to go
since some of us went in 2003. I think these scouts (and their parents) are
a little afraid of going outside the unit for a BIG trek.

I feel they are really missing out on a great opportunity to meet other
scouts and leaders, and experience one of the ONCE in a life time treks of
BSA. A council contigent may be their only chance to
go..........................

Both types of crews have advantages and disadvantages, the main thing to
keep in mind is both give scouts a chance to go to PHILMONT.
