Re: [Philmont]: Crew noise - was - Challenges with our reputation

Hi Dan. You observed, "I don't think we have ever had any problem with our
scouts making too much noise in the backcountry. After a full day of
backpacking, we are usually so tired when we get to camp that we make dinner
and go to bed."

This observation raised a question that I have been thinking about. What is
too noisy on the trail?

My 2003 crew chattered a great deal, principally about video games. However,
we had a few champion talkers and they could discuss about any subject that
came to mind. (One time, one Scout said, "I am going to talk about random
things." He then proceeded to do so.) My 2006 crew is different, but
certainly not quiet. They like to play mind games (such as 20 questions) and
sing. It is actually fun.

I like them talking. I do not believe that the guys are out of control. The
conversations give the guys something to do to pass the time and forget
about how hard they are working. When they quiet down, I can tell we need to
take a break. On the other hand, we do not see much wildlife and we do not
sneak up on people approaching us.

Any suggestions on how a crew should sound on the trail?
