 The kids and some adults do better with synthetic materials because they do seem to get things wet some how. Down is the best way to go because of the weight. The 2 lb to 3 lb is best when weight is a issue, Adult or Youth! My bag is a Campmor down @ 2.6 lbs. If money is the concern I suggest synthetic, if not down. Money on the trails of Philmont has no "VALUE". The people that during to practice hikes that had bought things I didn't suggest because of the weight, when they returned them and bought the items I suggested. When on the trail and they were leaning over their walking sticks, I would ask them if the wanted the item that was heavier or the money difference between the two items. Money has no VALUE on the trails at Philmont to me. Ounces in the morning are pounds at night!

  Talked to a parent yesterday who just bought a down sleeping bag for her son. The Scout is small so weight is definitely an issue. She explained to the sales person at a local outdoor shop what he would be doing and he reccomended a down bag that weighs 2 lbs.

  I told her I didn't think that down was the best way to go because of what happens when it gets wet. He will be at Philmont in late June/early July. Is he better off staying w/down or should he go to synthetic?
