Take a look at the Sierra Designs Cloudripper. A down bag in a waterproof shell. The Sierra Designs bag is about the least expensive model. I know other manufacturers also offer a waterproof down bag.

I have one (Cloudripper) that my daughter used at Philmont this summer. I've slept out in dewey conditions under the Noah's Tarp without having any dampness in the bag at all. If you have a Scout or adult set on a down bag, but that person is not normally a careful packer, this might be a solution.

Having said that, I still prefer my North Face down Blue Kazoo. Just a litte more comfortable for my tastes. I know how to keep it dry, so I don't worry about it.

Subject: [Philmont]: Down vs synthetic bags?

Talked to a parent yesterday who just bought a down sleeping bag for her son. The Scout is small so weight is definitely an issue. She explained to the sales person at a local outdoor shop what he would be doing and he reccomended a down bag that weighs 2 lbs.

I told her I didn't think that down was the best way to go because of what happens when it gets wet. He will be at Philmont in late June/early July. Is he better off staying w/down or should he go to synthetic?
