I was cleaning out some files of things I'd printed prior to our first trip to Philmont this past summer. I actually saw this the first time about a month AFTER we had come back home so I had some personal experiences to fall back on. Had I seen it before we went, I'm not sure what I would have thought.
>From Dr. Bob...
During an off-line discussion early this year with some other List members, we further explored this phenomenon (of crews lack of training for lower numbered treks). One of the comments I made is that the picture of what Philmont "really" is, would be a lot more accurate if the current ratings of "Typical", "Rugged", "Strenuous", and "Superstrenuous" were renamed as: "Strenuous", "Superstrenuous", "Damn Near Impossible", and "Where Should We Ship Your Body?"
I chuckled then, and I chuckle now. We did Trek 4 this summer, including the hike up the south side of Trail Peak. If that wasn't strenuous, I'd hate to know what is.
Just thought I'd share a tidbit from the archives.
