MessageThe part about not getting to take advantage of an event in a town is something which troubles me tremendously. I've heard of stories of getting to a town too late to participate, even though the crew arrived relatively early in the day. I've also heard stories of crew rangers not signing up crews early enough in base camp for some events in some towns. This whole thing bothers me. If a crew is given a trek which includes certain activities, it would seem both flat wrong and quite unfair to deny them the opportunity to participate. After all, getting to Philmont once in a lifetime for many of these Scouts should be a close to perfect experience!

There are lots of resources for this, some manual, some on the web. Others should fill in those recommendations.

My thoughts are that there are many items that often do not get considered. For example, the number of showers you might have a chance at, or how important is coming home to base camp by foot power (Tooth of Time) vs. a bus.

I would ask the boys how important backpacking mileage is. Some crews really want to perform; bagging many miles and lots of peaks. They always seem self-satisfied. I've never had a crew that wanted to to that. I have seen some regrets though, and was able to push some grumbling away by saying "you had a chance to speak up and set a physical goal."

Another thing to ask for is which treks promise, but do not deliver. I think they have modified 23, but as laid out it's used to be very difficult to get the program planned for Harlan. Also, some items like horses are not guaranteed. It's bad if you work hard to get burro races or horse rides, but there aren't any resources left once you roll through logistics.

I am looking for tools to help our crew choose our trek. I have the 2003 Philmont Guidebook to adventure for reference but would like to email the crew the possible Programs they can choose from.

Does anyone have a list of the Programs and the Program Features written out like the guide?

I plan on having the crew rank order their Program preferences and then find the top choices and make a best fit with last years Trek itineraries. Does anyone have an Excel file that can help grade responses and compare then to the Treks for best fit?
