The only activities that you get hard reservations for are horses & burros.
When you leave logistics, you know what time and how many you are going to
get, and that can change based on the health of the animals when you arrive.
In '04 our trek description said that we would get horses at Beaubien ... we
assumed that meant we would get them on either our arrival day or our
layover day. When we went through logistics we were told that there were no
horses available on the days we were in camp. 18 horses were available on
the morning of our departure day, so each crew got nine and we did a morning
ride for the 18 youth in our two crews.
Other activities are first come first served .... period. No preference is
given to crews that are camping or crews whose itineraries specify that they
have a specific activity. Crews just passing through can elect to stop and
partake. As Dr. Bob said, in most cases the staff will do whatever they can
to serve you, but it may not be as you had planned. We got jammed three
times, once at Clear Creek when our 11am arrival found Black Powder booked
for the balance of the day. We were offered a 8:00am slot the next morning
but we had a long walk over Phillips to Cyphers so we passed. The others,
Rock Climbing & Spar Poles, were cancelled due to weather. Going in Black
Powder and Rock Climbing were high on our guys list ... At first this bugged
me, but upon reflection I realized that its more about the journey than the
activities. Many of them can be done back home, so hump it in for the ones
that are really important to your crew and don't sweat the rest of them. At
the end of the day our most vivid memories involve things like the tooth,
our ranger, crew interactions and close encounters of the bear kind ... the
activities, and we had plenty of them, don't seem to come up much.
