[philmont] Team Building Skills

Teams can be fostered through the use of a COPE course, as well as
through practice hikes and other crew bonding activities. I don't
recall who mentioned it to me--perhaps it was thru this list--but one
of the most common post-trek comments at Philmont for crews that did
COPE at Head of Dean or elsewhere is that it enhanced their crew's
cohesion, and that they wished it had come earlier in their trek.

If your council has a COPE program, check it out. If not, many parks
and recs depts and church camps offer a similar experience. A COPE
experience can be particularly helpful if you are putting together a
provisional crew. COPE events will give the advisors and crew leaders
an opportunity to see how individuals as well as the group itself
responds to stress, problems solving, etc.

In the interests of full disclosure, I add that I am a COPE director in
NCAC--and I won't take a crew on a long trip without doing COPE with
them first.
