I am not the only one here who has referred to this publication in the past. Many of the questions that new and experienced advisors have are answered in this publication. If you value your time, spend the money early and read this sooner than later. Then if you still have questions, consult the listserve. Once a year, at least, we are fortunate to hear from James Moss when he updates us on some of his test results of various equipment. Jim is asked by a number of mfg to test drive equipement in adverse conditions.

Subject: [philmont] Philmont Advisor's Guide
It is with a great deal of pleasure that I announce that the 2006 version of the Philmont Advisor's Guide is now available. This document began after two advisors returned home after their first trek at Philmont and said "I wish I had known that BEFORE I went to Philmont". It has been updated as Philmont's backcountry protocols have changed and is now 115 pages long. It is filled with common sense advice from experienced Philmont advisors and Philmont rangers. It now serves as the basis for several council's Philmont training programs.
It is available as a MS Word email attachment for a $10 donation to Venturing Crew 1519. It serves as the crew's primary fundraiser and has supported treks to Maine, Canada, Philmont and Iceland. Let me know if you would like a copy.
Cooper Wright
Associate Advisor, Crew 1519
Co-editor of the Philmont Advisor's Guide
