[philmont] 2006 Cavalcade Reports

We were on a cavalcade last summer. Most of the equipment was fine but our
stove was bad. It had not been cleaned and if we hadn't had an engineer on
the team, I'm not sure we could have gotten it to work. It blinked on us
several times.

>> I haven't noticed any reports or feedback from 2006 Cavalcade
>> participants this year. As an advisor to a crew next year (803-CX), I'm
>> interested in learning as much as I can.
>>
>> One area that I'm interested in hearing opinions on is whether or not to
>> bring troop equipment for crew gear.
>>
>> For backpacking, I would recommend doing so (a topic that has been
>> discussed here several times), as the crew gets to work with tents,
>> tarps and cookware that they have become accustomed to during shake
>> downs. Plus it can shave time off the itinerary during check-in and
>> check-out, valuable time if your Amtrak train is late arriving (as ours
>> was in 2004).
>>
>> But I read in the 2006 Cavalcade Guide that Philmont provides both
>> stoves and fuel bottles for Cavalcade crews, which is different than
>> from backpacking treks where the crew provides that equipment. This
>> leads me to believe that the Cavalcade outfitting and check-in procedure
>> may differ greatly from backpacking crew check-in. And that bringing our
>> own gear may actually disrupt the wrangler's check-in process and slow
>> us down.
>>
>> Does anyone have any insight to this issue?
>>
>> Thanks
