[Philmont] 2006 Cavalcade Reports

Thanks Jim, Lise and Calvin. I think it makes sense for Cavalcade crews
to go with the Philmont gear as the way they handle it negates one of
the benefits of bringing your own, namely eliminating the stop at
Services. Plus I won't have to worry about cleaning and shipping stoves,
which saves another stop at both check-in and check-out. Hey! I like
this Cavalcade idea!!! ;-)

But I read in the 2006 Cavalcade Guide that Philmont provides
both stoves and fuel bottles for Cavalcade crews, which is different
than from backpacking treks where the crew provides that equipment.
This leads me to believe that the Cavalcade outfitting and check-in
procedure may differ greatly from backpacking crew check-in. And that
bringing our own gear may actually disrupt the wrangler's check-in
process and slow us down.

Does anyone have any insight to this issue?

        Hi Willie:

Cavalcade crews do check in differently than regular trek crews.
The wranglers have checked out a supply of tents, dining flys, cook
kits, and other assorted pieces of trail equipment at the beginning of
the summer, and they keep it all until the end of the summer. They
re-use it for each crew. Also, the wranglers go to Camping Services to
pick up the food. So, at the beginning of the Cavalcade, the crew does
not usually go to Services. They do have to check out through Services,
but it is just a quick sign off since the crew did not check out any
equipment.
