[philmont] philmont peaks

Black Mountain and "The Wall" (French Henry to Copper Park) are two of
the last True Trails of Horror at Philmont. Though I will admit that
Copper Park to Baldy Summit in full packs (Rayado Treks) is probably the
ultimate in testing the old Marine Corps adage that you can't drown in
your own sweat. The Bear Canyon Trail up the side of the ridge towards
Black Jack's camp will definitely put some hair on your chest. But "The
Stairmaster" (Indian Writings to Hart Peak) isn't really long enough to
make you see the Face of God - just a faint outline (He will be smiling).

Many of the previous Trails of Horror are no more, due to the building
of new trails. Old Timers on the List will recall (and not fondly) the
old Trail Peak trail (straight up the face), the old Shaefers Pass to
Shaefers Peak trail (ditto), the old Bear Canyon to Santa Claus trail,
and others, especially around Mt. Phillips. REAL old timers may
remember two trails that went straight up the draws from east of Clarks
Fork up to Shaefers Peak and the Tooth of Time Ridge. "Ouch".

The stuff of dreams, or if you prefer, nightmares. And enduring
memories. Parts of Black Mountain I did on all fours - something you
never forget. "This is where we grow Boy Scouts".
