>Black Mountain was one of the toughest challenges I have ever had. I do
not want to say the toughest but cannot remember what takes it's place. I
think the big issue was the Snow and Ice on the trail/mountain for the last
500 feet or so. I did not hike down. I aimed for the next tree and did a
slide\fall thing that worked out fine as long but if I missed I don't think
I would be writing this<grin>.

have a tremendous amount of respect for anyone hiking up from Black Mountain
Camp. I would not want to do it.

It was on the climb out of Black Mountain Camp that I thought I had made a
mistake in trying to go back to Philmont at age 60, with too many years of
working at a computer instead of a rock quarry. Having done about 100 miles
of different trails over two treks, that qualified as the worst trail I had
ever experienced at Philmont. Until I reached the top, I wasn't sure I was
going to make it, and the climb up and the climb down really did me in for
the remainder of our short trek (perhaps another 15-16 miles over 3 days).
Reading your evaluations makes me feel better, but doesn't negate the fact
that I still need to lose those extra pounds.
One delightful find at the Tooth of Time Traders was that a patch series for
the major peaks is now available. There wasn't one for Black Peak, but I
picked up some mementos for my 1993 trek.
