[philmont] philtents

A few months ago, on a whim, I purchased a surplus Philtent from the Ranch.

I used it this weekend on a troop campout (not backpacking).

I have to say I was very pleased with the tent. I do agree that it uses quite a few guy lines to get the job done (20 stakes are required for full setup), but I was as thrilled as a proud new papa to look at its sleek lines and use it in the evening in one-man mode. I'm sure it had heavy use before being turned out to pasture, but it was none the worse for wear, a testament to its sturdy construction. Weight seemed to be within tolerable limits, as well. Length was greater than the Eureka Timberline 2's my troop uses, although height was less. Width appeared greater. Construction appeared to be more expedition-weight than our troop tents.

Quite a step up from the BSA "Overnighter" canvas tent I was issued at the Ranch in 1970.

The reason for this post is as a counterpoint to agonizing about whether to purchase one's own tent, or whether to recommend to the youth that they purchase their own tent (when you or they might have to purchase boots, packs, sleeping bags or other gear). It's certainly not the end of the world if you or others in your crew wind up with a Philtent. (in two man mode-it's still a bit heavy for a solo). Using a Philtent may be a blessing in disguise, when balanced against a rash purchase of a tent that, on reflection, turns out to be less than optimal.

In any case, I like my new (old) Philtent. Certainly the price was right.

All for now.
