[philmont] Fruit Basket Turnover

OK, Gang, this thread ought to last long enough to keep everyone warm during
the holidays!

Each year, a PhilRep comes to our council and gives a PhilTalk. This year,
he announced that all the itineraries were being redone and renumbered
except for 1 and 33, I believe. If true, that means we’ll have an “active”
time next February and March helping our crews pre-determine their choices
before the book arrives. We, and I presume many of you, always use the
prior year’s book to teach the crews and let them pick 1-5. The risk has
always been, of course, that the itineraries will have changed. In fact,
however, those changes have been minor and something easily handled by the
Crew Leader and Lead Advisor, thus not requiring a full crew meeting again.

So, this year, that may not be as possible. The crew can still make the
choices that matter (North vs South, peak vs another peak, clockwise vs the
other way, long miles vs more programs in camp, specific programs they
really want to do, and so on); but the actual number of the treks that fit
what they want may have to be done after the book comes in. Naturally, we’d
like to avoid that, if possible.

My question is do any of you have enough connection with the logisticians
(i.e. Doug) that will allow the new information to become available before
the book hits the box? I realize that’s a very pregnant question and any
who want to cuss or discuss with me about this can PM me off-list.

The last time we experienced this was in the early ‘90’s when they added the
Valle Vidal treks and kinda cleaned house of the existing 22. It was not
too bad back then, partially because the various itineraries had definite
personalities and peculiarities that allowed them to be pretty easily
grouped and excluded by process of elimination. Most of them then, as now,
had reputations that allowed a full discussion. Back then, I subscribed to
the rookie belief that some itineraries at Philmont were worthless.
Experience has taught me that with very, very few exceptions, each itinerary
can be done with fun.

All the wonderful and hard work that was done this summer to produce the
latest guide and itinerary selector has not, I hope, been wasted. It does
appear, however, that the keepers of the sacred bundle may have to stand
ready to paste the newly numbered itineraries together using files for each
campsite and program as soon as they get the book. Maybe some dispensation
could be granted to allow them to get the information beforehand in
recognition of the phenomenal service they perform for the List. Someone
who matters should ask.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving. You and yours are thought of by me and mine
as part of our extended family; so . . . GIMME BACK that drumstick!
