OK, Gang, this thread ought to last long enough to keep everyone warm during
the holidays!

Each year, a PhilRep comes to our council and gives a PhilTalk. This year,
he announced that all the itineraries were being redone and renumbered
except for 1 and 33, I believe. If true, that means we’ll have an “active”
time next February and March helping our crews pre-determine their choices
before the book arrives. We, and I presume many of you, always use the
prior year’s book to teach the crews and let them pick 1-5. The risk has
always been, of course, that the itineraries will have changed. In fact,
however, those changes have been minor and something easily handled by the
Crew Leader and Lead Advisor, thus not requiring a full crew meeting again.

So, this year, that may not be as possible. The crew can still make the
choices that matter (North vs South, peak vs another peak, clockwise vs the
other way, long miles vs more programs in camp, specific programs they
really want to do, and so on); but the actual number of the treks that fit
what they want may have to be done after the book comes in. Naturally, we’d
like to avoid that, if possible.

My question is do any of you have enough connection with the logisticians
(i.e. Doug) that will allow the new information to become available before
the book hits the box? I realize that’s a very pregnant question and any
who want to cuss or discuss with me about this can PM me off-list. <snip>

Comments...

While the renumbering of the treks is WAY overdue (or at least the
reclassification of difficulty while still using the existing numbers - long
time PhilListers know of my contention and the backup for it regarding the
present ratings being based on bad data in 2000, and the obvious disregard
of the rating when replacing treks with new ones) my brief conversation with
Doug when my Autumn Adventure crew ran into him at Cito in September makes
me question the PhilRep you heard. Doug's comment was on the lines of he
hoped to have the 2007 TREKS done in October and that the changes would be
minor.

Having said that, the last renumbering was in 2000, when five treks were
added to 30 from 1999 and all were renumbered (except for #1). That TREKS
book included the cross reference to the prior numbers, so those who had
used the 1999 books only had to look at the new treks, and to changes to the
old ones. My trek comparison spreadsheet still continues that
cross-reference, only because I have not gotten around to eliminating that
column (and I have been waiting for the day when I will need it again)...
