[philmont] Fruit Basket Turnover

In my experiences talking to Doug and others around the Ranch, Doug
keeps the Treks book and itinerary changes pretty confidential, very
few know, and he keeps pretty tight lips about what might change and
what might be expected. This is to be fair to everyone and not let
some have an accidental unfair advantage of advance
knowledge. Almost every year we hear, Doug said this or that, or a
Phil Rep said this or that. And when the Treks book actually comes
out, not much of the advance info was really reliable. I'd question
whether a "Phil Rep" really knew much specifics about itinerary
changes, and if he did, he wouldn't say much.

I've been tracking year-to-year changes in detail since 1992, and got
really organized about it in 2000 when Mark Griffin (PTC Director
till Feb 00) generously gave us the itinerary cross reference listing
between 1999 to 2000, the year they went from 30 to 35 treks and
renumbered most them - the most major and significant changes in
recent years. (See
http://www.troop116.org/philmont/phlitinxref05-99.htm .) (A cross
ref for the most recent 5 years only is at
http://www.troop116.org/philmont/phlitinxref.htm .)

Bottom line in my book, don't get too up tight about what you hear no
matter how reliable you think is the source. Go ahead and use the
previous year's Treks book with your crew's Scout leadership to pick
itineraries and features you like. Then when you get the new book,
do a side by side comparison and note the changes. It takes about 30
minutes, less with someone helping. You're sure to find ones the
same or very close to what you previously picked, or you may even
find something you like better.

Of course, it's always fun to speculate. But it's for sure Doug, and
anyone else who thinks they know, won't tell you much ahead of
time. And did I hear the itineraries in the Treks book will be
released online simultaneously with sending them out, March 15,
right? (See http://www.scouting.org/philmont/camping/treks/index.html .)

OK, everyone put this on hold until I can talk to my Expedition Leader who
attended the meeting at council. I need to tell him with what you think
Doug told you and see if my guy misunderstood what was said at the meeting.
When he first told me about this I didn't ask him the name of the PhilRep.
In 2005, Doug, himself, came to our meeting. I'll find out & report what's
what. So, for the time being . . . "never mind".

While the renumbering of the treks is WAY overdue (or at least the

my brief conversation with Doug at Cito in September makes
me question the PhilRep you heard. Doug's comment was on the lines of he
hoped to have the 2007 TREKS done in October and that the changes would be
minor.

Each year, a PhilRep comes to our council and gives a PhilTalk. This year,
he announced that all the itineraries were being redone and renumbered
except for 1 and 33, I believe. If true, that means we'll have an "active"
