[philmont] philtents

Another intriguing feature of the canvas Overnighter tent I was issued in 1970 was the internal central pole, required for setup.

In 1972, myself, my brother and another scout took the troop's nylon dining fly, which covered the three of us quite nicely and at low weight, but is no longer permitted in bear country.

Scrounging for firewood is another memory of pre-gas stove Philmont, causing the eating of lunches for dinners when the rain was too much. Many lunches included Spam or Bif or Treat, with crackers. Sliced thinly, and presented on a cracker, they could be mistaken for backcountry hors d'oervres. There were also quite a few cooked breakfasts in the rotation, including pancakes and powdered eggs, which required frying pans and a squeeze packages of margerine to be carried in addition to today's pots.

I regret the cessation of the program which provided Dutch ovens and cobbler ingredients available at each and every staffed camp, on request, and at starting camps, for Ranger instruction. I believe the fire danger and/or lack of firewood caused this very attractive option to be discontinued.

All on this part of the thread.
