[philmont] philtents

I wish to thank John LeBlanc for his kind words concerning my action of buying a used Philtent on a whim and setting it up on a troop campout.

I own about 8 tents already. I certainly did not "need" another tent, as it is clear John realizes.

I collect Boy Scout memorabilia. However, it is clear that a tent is in a different category than a display of patches or neckerchiefs.

One of my Scouts, almost 18 and on the cusp of attaining his Eagle, asked me for information about ordering a surplus Philtent, once he saw mine on the trip. He was too late to sign up for the campout as a part of the troop, but volunteered to help the Webelos we had invited to camp with us. A great kid. If he can get one of these tents for $40, it will certainly carry him through his college years and into young adulthood.

I want to be one of those Scouters John describes, who wears a Smokey the Bear hat. I have previously posted about the wearing of the red jacket, despite its cost. I bought a Smokey hat at the last Jamboree, but the young lady who accompanied me claimed it for her own.

I'm going solo in 2010.

I hope Richie gets to purchase his surplus Philtent, for $40, as I did.
