Subject: [philmont] the mean old bull
My scout career extended from 1965 to 1972. We lived only a short drive from Lakehurst Naval Air Station (site of the Hindenburg disaster), where surplus sales were open to the public every third Saturday. An army poncho could be had for 75 cents (why doesn't my keyboard have the symbol for cents? I never noticed that before), field jackets were $5.00, down sleeping bags $6.00, canteen, cup and cover 50 cents. Canteen belt, meat can and cover (what some would call a mess kit), head for entrenching tool (you were on your own for the handle) were all available for pennies.
I went to Philmont in 1970 sporting two one quart army canteens on a web belt. The hipstrap of my borrowed cruiser packframe went over it. This arrangement lasted about half the trek until I noticed I had developed sores on my hip bones. The scars are still barely visible, but were quite prominent for quite a few years.
Well, you live and learn.
