Well, I'm an old woods walker. It's just what I like to do. And my favorite time to waly in the woods is in the cold rain. Two nights at Apache Springs in 2002 with a cold, all day rain on the layover made it a nice reprieve from the disappointment that the staff that year choose to destroy all the arrows in their spoare time and disregard the needs of the Scouts on trek. That's another story, but when life gives you lemons, make lemonade----------right?
Well, we used thats day for tent activities such as various card games and seeing if they could really get the whole crew into the girls 4 person Timberline for various rainy day games. There is something to be said for larger tents on rainy day layovers.
Well, ahile this was goign on I took the time to simply walk in the rain and in doing so walked up on two seperate groups of mule der and another group of elk. Don't know if 4 qualifies as a herd, but I got some good pix from about 30 feet away.
Being a hunter, I knew I could use the wet conditions to cover my sounds and scent.
Well, today was the first cold day this year and I was off so I drove up to our former council Scout camp which was sold and logged sadly a couple of years ago and took a walk in the rain aloong the creek. It evoked a lot of memories and a lot of emotion that it is not available to Scouts anymore.
The walk in the woods in the cold rain as the front literally blew through was enjoyable as always. That's the same thign I lived for at Scout camp over fifty years ago and it just doesn't get any better.
Some things change and some things don't.
Right now I'm currled up in our den beside our first fire of the year thumbing through Jaegers "Wildwoods Wisdom" that my Scoutmaster gave me for Christmas over 50 years ago. It's still good reading.
Have a good evening and keep the home fires burning.
