Greetings Doug,

If the purpose of your trip is for you and your wife to have an opportunity
to hike in the backcountry of Philmont, and for her to experience "a taste"
of what you experienced on your treks, the Autumn Adventure is the way to
go.

If the purpose of your trip is for your wife to get a taste of what you
experienced on your treks and for the two of you to hike a little at
Philmont, and at the same time to meet and discuss things that will help you
improve your program in your unit, the PTC is the way to go.

They are two totally different animals. PTC is a conference setting where
the spouses get to do fun stuff while their significant others are in their
sessions. This is not a bad thing. I learned a great deal at the session I
went to, and learned probably just as much from talking to the other
participants during breaks, at meals etc. Wednesday are usually a free day
for you to go and do stuff (you can't go into the backcountry very far -
Lover's Leap, the T-Rex Print, etc.) and you will be together in the
evenings.

Autumn Adventure is mini Philmont for adults (or others) but not necessarily
a trek. I haven't been on an Autumn Adventure trek, but from what I have
read, you have a number of options as to whether it is hiking each day, base
camp and day hike, or just ruminate and enjoy the clouds going by.

But I don't think that Autumn Adventure can possibly compare to a Philmont
trek. The camps aren't staffed, there are no programs, it's typically not
as long, and there are other differences. And PTC isn't even close. Again,
they are all different animals.

I know this probably doesn't help you in your decision process, but which
one you choose is really a matter of what your expectations are.

Good Luck and

Happy Trails,

Roy Fisher
