Both times that I was at Philmont, in 1965 as an Explorer Scout and
crew member, and in 1978, as an Advisor, I was very impressed with the
high quality of the staff, but especially the rangers, at Philmont.
Philmont has been described as the "Summit of Scouting". It is that
in the sense of the physical challenges that are presented at the
Ranch, but it is also the summit in the experience a boy will have
coming in contact with staff and rangers who exemplify the Scout
Promise and Scout Law.
On both occasions our rangers were excellent. They knew their stuff. They were
living examples of what it means to be trustworthy, loyal, helpful,
friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean
and reverent.
You have a great tradition to live up to in being a ranger. In the
very act of asking for advice on how to be a good ranger I'm led to
believe you will do an excellent job. Follow the Philmont guidelines
strictly as to the duties of the job. Use the Scout Promise and Scout
Law as the basis for working with the crews you are assigned to. By
your example lead each crew to set as its goal to have the best trek
ever in the history of Philmont. One ranger tradition is to prepare a
special meal for his crew - you might want to research recipes to make
your version of this tradition especially memorable. Our ranger
prepared sopapillas, a special
New Mexican treat (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sopapillas for
information on this dish).
You will know you have done a great job when your crew reciprocates
your kindness and friendship to them.
Being selected to be a ranger at Philmont is a high honor and great opportunity.
Sending you a "Scout salute" your way for your forthcoming service to
Scouting in
this prestigious assignment.
