Matt,
In '05 we had a brand new ranger on his first trek, we didn't know that until he said goodbye, but he sure acted like a pro. He scolded the crew only once on a miserable hike up the muddy road from Harlan to Devil's Wash Basin. They pulled together later when one of the guys got a little altitude sickness that day, his gentle scolding was the right catalyst. We had a very practised crew with our own cooking system. He said "I'm supposed to show you the PSR method, but I'd be wasting my time and just making you mad" and he let the lesson slide. The scouts and adults could tell the difference between what was policy and what was advice by the way he said it. Jonathan was a real trail advisor/Ranger and I hope the Ranch and he got to spend a couple of summers together. The only bummer was that the PR people lost the film from our crew picture and we had to retake it when we got back to base, w/o him in the picture.
Have fun and learn what you can from the scouts and advisors. Jonathan got interested in wildflowers because of our interest (or at least he pretended to).
