[philmont] AA and the Valle

Philmont has been trying to stick to the policy of using turnarounds only as starting/ending points for AA treks. Although I am not aware of any reason you couldn't go into the Valle on AA (this land is your land), you would probably have to start from Ponil or Maxwell turnaround. Mid trek food drops are made at staff camp locations, but I doubt if they include the Valle in that description. If you didn't need resupply, that would not be a problem.

Of course, if you didn't need a guide, purchased Philfood through the mail (or made arrangements to purchase it at CHQ rather than having it shipped-or did your own food) and had your own vehicles, you could hike and camp in the Valle to your heart's content by arrangement with the Carson National Forest. Philmont's special use permit applies to operation of staff camps on National Forest land. It does not operate to keep members of the general public out, as far as I know. (Your guide carries a radio and checks in with base every night, and also carries a group first aid kit. Nice to have, but you can bring your own first aid kit and many a group has gone into the wilderness without a radio).
