A person ages 18-19-20 in a Philmont Expedition crew can be counted as either a youth or as an adult, however you like, or need. The crew must have at least one adult 21 or over, so an 18-19-20 y-o can either be the 2nd adult or can count as a youth and not hurt the 4-adult maximum limit per crew. I've even seen a situation where an adult got injured midway thru a trek, had to leave, and a 19 y-o Venturer who had been listed as a youth on the roster then became that 2nd adult. Don't think it matters whether that person is a Scout or Venturer, but I could be wrong and maybe that crew broke some rule. But a Scout who is 18-19-20 can for sure count either way in a Crew. As far as tenting, rest room & shower facilities, and youth protection matters, that's a different issue and your best reference is the Guide to Safe Scouting - prefer not get into that discussion here.

By the way, our troop got the GOOD news this afternoon as well. We are lucky to have a June 2009 slot. We were also lucky to be able to fill 2 crews in 2006 when we were on the wait list and got a call in March 2006 we could go. We already had another HA trip planned to the Grand Canyon area, so we just did both trips, with many of the same guys. It'll be nice to have a chance to go when we have time to really plan ahead.

Hello

We have received word that our troop has received a trek for 2009. If we have a Scout who turns 18 in February 2008. If he stays registered will he be considered an adult or youth?
