Congratulations to the units getting in for 2003, and condolences to those
who didn't. If you didn't make the cut, not all is lost. Philmont does have
a significant number of drops, both from units and council contingents, but
you have to be patient.

Also, if your council is not sending a contingent, contact adjacent councils
and get on a waiting list in case they can't fill all their slots from their
council.

I have been our council's contingent coordinator for several trips, and have
gone on five treks since 1988 (plus PTC training four times), so I've got a
fair amount of knowledge about Philmont operations. If anyone has a question
I'll try to give a reasonably intelligent answer.

One trend I see is that Philmont is getting more requests for reservations
from council contingents since it is getting harder for individual units to
get it. I encourage our units to try first, then apply for the council spots
if they are unable to get a reservation. Also, we put together 'blended'
crews from multiple units so that scouts and scouters from smaller units are
able to go.
