POV (privately owned vehicle ) would be my choice although its more like 22 hours
drive time. I was at PTC this summer and saw multiple cars parked at the base camp but
cannot verify whether they were staff, crew vehicles or parent pick up/ drop off or
not. Some were very dusty.
 
FYI Venture crews with older youth ( 18 and up ) have another recourse to getting a
slot. They can work at Philmont. Rick Barnes the PTC director says that he needs about
900 youth a summer and usually makes about 1300 offers because of conflicts
 and they get room board and a paycheck. They also get days off to use as they wish.
And he is always looking for new blood because they lose a certain percentage each
year to graduation ( college, that is ).
