We (2001 618-J) took the train and loved it. You can read about our trip

Not as cheep as cars but avoided the cost of overnight stay each way so
came very close. This also allows the Advisors to be fresh when they
arrive and not wore out from driving.
The we had no problem sleeping on the train and for most it was the only
time they had ever been on a train.
Philmont sends bus transportation to Raton to meet all the trains. Worked
slick.
I give a hardy thumbs up for the train.
