Signe Rogers mentioned Rayado and R.O.C.S. In addition to these two,
there are other Philmont opportunities. Here is a description
Philmont's "other" programs.

The 20 day Rayado Trek is for individuals at least age 15 by January
1 of the year attending, and not older than 21. Rayado participants
will experience more of Philmont's backcountry than during normal
treks and will have program opportunities beyond those normally
available. Rayado is unparalleled for developing outdoor leadership,
group dynamics, wilderness problem-solving and advanced outdoor
skills. A Rayado Trek encourages participants to attain a high level
of personal growth and self-reliance. Previous Philmont experience is
strongly recommended but not required. Crews are composed of young
men and women (not coed) from throughout the United States. The 2002
fee is $500 per person. Arrival dates are June 18 and July 16.
Financial assistance is available.

The Roving Outdoor Conservation School (R.O.C.S.) is a 21 day program
in which participants build new trails, repair existing trails and
camp sites and learn about recreation management. This program
replaced the old Trail Crew program. Individuals must be at least age
16 and not older than 21. Previous Philmont experience is strongly
recommended but not required. Crews are composed of young men and
women (not coed) from throughout the United States. The 2002 fee is
$300 per person. Arrival dates are June 9, June 16, June 23, June 30,
July 7, July 14, July 21 and July 28.

The Ranch Hand program is for Scouts and male Venturers at least age
16 and not older than 21, who have knowledge of horsemanship and
horse care and want to expand their skills and experience. Each Ranch
Hand crew will spend 8 days helping the horse department staff with
hay hauling, saddling, chores and other horse program tasks, and then
will participate in their own special horse Cavalcade trek for 8
days. The maximum weight limit for participants is 200 lbs. There is
no fee to attend this program. The arrival date is July 7.

The Order of the Arrow Trail Crew is a special two week program for
Arrowmen who spend their time working on a backcountry work project
with other Arrowmen from throughout the United States. Participants
must be at least age 16 and not older than 21. The 2002 fee is $100
per person.

Each summer, Philmont has approximately 900 seasonal summer jobs open
to young people (some for old folks too) at least age 18. Jobs include
working on conservation projects, working in the Philmont Training
Center, working in the cafeteria and trading post, backcountry staff
positions, being a Philmont Ranger and many more.

Applications for these programs may be obtained by calling Philmont
at 505-376-2281, by e-mail at <philprog@cimarron.springercoop.com> or
by writing to Philmont Scout Ranch, Rt 1 Box 35, Cimarron NM 87714.

Another program for young people, run by the Philmont Training Center,
is the National Junior Leader Instructor Camp. NJLIC nominations must
be made through your council's Training Committee.
